Fixing Loose Toilet Parts
Many common toilet problems can be fixed by making minor adjustments. Loose parts, such as the toilet handle or toilet seat, are rather easy and simple DIY projects. Here are some of the most common loose toilet part problems with instructions for easy repair! Most of the time you may only need a screwdriver or a wrench...But just in case, keep your phone handy to call in a pro near you.
Loose Toilet Handle
When working in the tank of the toilet it may be easiest if you turn off the water. This is not necessary but may help you not get as wet during the repair process! If there is any build-up or debris around the handle mount (inside the tank) make sure you clean it off. Using a wrench tighten the mounting nut counterclockwise.
Loose Toilet Seat
The toilet seat is attached to the toilet bowl with nuts and bolts. Locate the nuts and bolts and use a screwdriver to tighten the bolts clockwise.
You will need to address a leaking toilet as soon as possible so water does not damage your floor. There are a couple of places to check to see if there are loose connections.
Water Supply Valve
Tighten the nut behind the water supply valve about 1/8 of a turn. Be careful to not damage the supply valve line. You may need to hold the pipe while tightening the nut. Additionally, check the supply line connection to the supply valve and tighten as needed.
Tank/Toilet Bowl Connection
Leaking can occur where the tank connects to the toilet bowl. Check the bolts where the tank is secured to the bowl and tighten as needed.
Water can be leaking from the bottom of the toilet where it meets the floor. Check the mounting bolts where the toilet is secured to the floor. Double-check the toilet is aligned properly and then tighten the bolts with a wrench.
