Common Bathtub Problems and Solutions

With so many fixtures, the bathroom can be home to many plumbing issues and emergencies. A leak is bound to occur eventually, and some of the worst leaks involve the bathtub.

In many cases, bathtub leaks can go undetected until it is too late—plus the moisture can foster mildew growth. Instead of letting bathtub leaks become a more serious issue, here are some tips from our plumbers at Integrity Home Solutions to solve these problems quickly.

Common Bathtub Problems

These are some of the most common bathtub problems that we come across at Integrity Home Solutions:

Plumbing Problem #1: Tub Faucet Leak

Water leaks are a common problem in bathrooms, and they can be frustrating to deal with. With so many fixtures and pipes in your bathroom, it can be difficult to identify the true source of a water leak. The signs of a leak may not always be obvious, but there are some things you can look out for.

Many faucet leaks are caused by an aging rubber washer inside the faucet assembly that dries out over time. The rubber washer serves as a seal between the metal valve seat and the stem of the faucet, and when it becomes too worn or damaged, water can seep through.

The good news is that fixing a leaky faucet is often a simple DIY task that homeowners can easily tackle themselves.

Don’t wait to fix leaks, they can end up costing you more money than it would take to fix the issue.

If you cannot troubleshoot these plumbing issues on your own, Integrity Home Solutions is available 24/7 to help diagnose all your bathroom plumbing issues. Call us today—813-473-6007

Plumbing Problem #2: Tub Drain Leak

A leak from your bathtub drain can be a frustrating and concerning issue for any homeowner. If you’ve noticed water accumulating around your bathtub, or perhaps even seeping through the ceiling below your bathroom, it’s important to address the issue as soon as possible.

While there are several potential causes of a bathtub drain leak, one of the most common culprits is actually located below the drain itself.

This problem can easily be fixed by removing the drain and applying new plumbers’ putty around the drain area. If you are unsure about how to remove the drain, call in our pros at Integrity Home Solutions to help.

Plumbing Problem #3: Low Water Pressure

To determine whether this is the issue, try switching from cold to hot water while taking a shower. If the low water pressure persists regardless of which temperature setting you use, then there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed by a professional plumber.

If it has low pressure when switching between the two, it means that there may be mineral buildup in the faucet aerator or the faucet cartridge that is blocking the water flow.

Tampa Bay is notorious for having hard water, so this is a common problem. If you have a removable aerator, take it out and soak it in vinegar overnight. If the aerator does not detach easily, you can soak the faucet or showerhead by tying a bag of vinegar around the head and soaking overnight.

If this does not solve the low water pressure problem, call a professional plumber from Integrity Home Solutions, and we will pull the cartridges and check the water pressure at the water meter.

Plumbing Problem #4: Mold

Sometimes no matter how often you clean, mildew always seems to find its way back to your bathroom.

Bathroom mildew can be caused by:

  • Moisture due to poor ventilation
  • Leaky toilets, sinks, or pipes
  • Damp materials such as rugs, towels, etc.

If you have a mildew problem in your bathtub, strip away and replace the caulk or sealant that is affected. Clean your bathroom with bleach, vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide—just don’t mix these products as they can cause a toxic reaction.

Open windows and doors when cleaning to provide fresh air and help dry everything out. Always use the ventilation fan when showering and change out damp towels for fresh ones regularly.
