Preparing for Hurricane Season: How to Protect Your HVAC System

June 23, 2023 by Integrity Home Solutions

As hurricane season approaches, it is important to take the necessary steps to protect your home and family. One crucial aspect that often goes overlooked is the protection of your HVAC system. Hurricanes can cause significant damage to these systems, leaving you without air conditioning when you need it most.

At Integrity Home Solutions, we understand the importance of having a functioning HVAC system during and after a hurricane. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to provide you with tips on how to protect your HVAC system from potential storm damage.

What to put on your hurricane to-do list:

#1. Get Your Air Conditioner Inspected

#2. Get a Surge Protector

#3. Install a Transfer Switch or Interlock Generator Kit

#4. Cover the Unit & Strap it Down

#5. Turn it Off

Stay Ahead of the Storm: Protecting Your HVAC Before Hurricanes Hit

Hurricane season is a time of great concern for homeowners living in areas prone to these devastating storms. (Hello, Florida!)

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your HVAC system remains in good condition and continues to provide comfort for your family even during the toughest weather conditions.

Don’t wait until a forecasted storm is imminent. Check these to-dos off your list NOW!

#1. Get Your Air Conditioner Inspected

An HVAC inspection is an invaluable tool that can help ensure that your AC unit is working optimally before a hurricane hits! (It can also ensure that it continues to run during a power outage if it is hooked up to a generator.)

An HVAC inspection will identify any issues with your air conditioner system and ensure that it’s functioning correctly before hurricane season hits.

The benefits of an HVAC inspection go beyond just ensuring comfort during hurricanes; it can also safeguard your system from damage when the power is turned back on.

#2. Get a Surge Protector

To protect your home’s heating and cooling system from power surges during storms, it may be time to invest in a whole-home surge protector. These devices block high voltage spikes from reaching your appliances and electronics, ensuring they don’t get damaged or destroyed.

Power outages and lightning strikes can cause surges that fry the internal components of your air conditioner or furnace unit, leading to expensive repairs or replacements.

By installing a whole-home surge protector, you can rest assured knowing your HVAC is safe from power fluctuations caused by severe weather events.

Whole-home surge protection is an excellent investment for homeowners who want to keep their appliances running smoothly during hurricane season. Contact our team at Integrity Home Solutions for a quote today at 813-473-6007!

#3. Install a Transfer Switch or Interlock Generator Kit

As hurricane season approaches, it’s important to consider installing a transfer switch or interlock generator kit for your home. In the event of a power outage caused by severe weather, these devices will allow you to continue using crucial systems such as your HVAC system and other appliances.

  • You may securely connect a portable generator to the electrical panel in your home using a transfer switch. This ensures that the power from the generator only goes where it’s needed, preventing back feed into utility lines which can be dangerous for maintenance workers.
  • An interlock kit works similarly by allowing you to connect a portable generator directly to your home’s electrical panel through an exterior outlet. However, it requires manual switching between utility and generator power sources to prevent overlap.

Investing in either of these options will not only provide peace of mind during hurricane season but also offer benefits year-round if the power goes out due to a blackout or emergency.

#4. Cover the Unit & Strap it Down

This is a step you won’t want to ignore. Make sure to cover your HVAC unit and strap it down securely before hurricane-force winds arrive. This will prevent water damage, flying debris, and other hazards from damaging your system, which could lead to costly repairs or replacements.

When preparing for a hurricane, make sure that you have all the necessary materials on hand, such as heavy-duty tarps or plastic sheeting and sturdy tie-downs or straps. These should be large enough to cover your entire outdoor unit while still leaving enough slack for air circulation.

IMPORTANT: Before covering the unit, turn off power to the system at the main panel switch and disconnect any electrical wiring or tubing connected to the exterior of your home.

#5. Turn it Off

When a hurricane is forecasted to make landfall, it’s essential to turn off your HVAC system. This will not only help protect your equipment but also ensure the safety of everyone in the house.

Shutting down your HVAC system protects it from damage caused by power surges or other electrical problems that can arise during a storm.

Turning the system off also helps prevent moisture buildup inside the unit and ductwork due to flooding or heavy rain. This can lead to mold growth and other issues that could impact indoor air quality.
