The sun is shining in Tampa Bay, and while it may be Fall, an AC breakdown could leave you sweating in the heat. What now? While we recommend calling our team at Integrity Home Solutions at the first sign of an air conditioner break down, there are a few things you can do to stay comfortable while waiting for our technicians to arrive.
While it is never ideal for your AC to stop working, here are some of Integrity’s top tips to beat the heat during repairs!
How to Stay Comfortable Without Air Conditioning
If your AC isn’t working, here are a few things that you can do to stay comfortable while you wait for help to arrive…
Tip # 1. Use Fans
Make use of the ceiling fans or portable rotating fans in your home to create a “breeze” that will help keep the heat at bay. While using fans won’t cool down your house, when air blows over your skin, it will help keep you cool.

Tip #2. Close the Blinds
Prevent the sun from heating your home and close all the blinds and curtains in your home. Although you may be tempted to open your windows to let in a breeze, keep them closed since you’ll just be letting in more warm air.
Tip #3. Turn Down the Lights
Traditional incandescent light bulbs get off a lot of heat when in use. If you haven’t made the switch to LED lights yet, you’ll want to keep the conventional light bulbs off while your AC is out of service. Use of other heat-generating appliances such as the oven or dryer should be kept to a minimum as well.
Tip #4. Stay Low
Warm air rises, so if you live in a two-story house, make yourself comfortable downstairs since those rooms are likely to be a little cooler than upstairs.
Tip #5. Pass the Time Elsewhere
If it gets too hot in your house during the day, take a dip in your pool if you have one, or hang out in a public air-conditioned space like a library.
If your AC technician cannot make it to your home until the next day, or if they must order parts, you may want to consider spending the night with friends, family, or at a hotel.

Tip #6. Don’t Overload Your Other Unit
If you have another AC unit, such as on the second floor, don’t overload it and avoid turning the thermostat down all the way. If you can keep the temperature at 75-76 degrees, that will help prevent extra wear and tear to your working AC unit and help you avoid a dreaded double AC breakdown.
Prevent Your AC from Breaking Down
Some breakdowns cannot be prevented, but proper AC maintenance can make all the difference in keeping your air conditioner running smoothly and efficiently.
To prevent AC breakdowns:
- Keep the air filter clean. A dirty air filter can cause your HVAC system to work harder than necessary and can cause breakdowns. This can be prevented by changing your air filter every 30-60 days.
- Clean around the unit. While you may remember to clean the vents inside your home, don’t forget to check the outside too. If you allow plants and weeds to grow out of control around the outdoor AC unit, your unit can malfunction. Leaves and other debris can cause breakdowns too. Keep all air vents clear to always ensure proper airflow!
