How to Choose Between Central AC or Window Units

June 23, 2023 by cmpdigital

You’ve been thinking about it for a long time and the time has finally come to purchase air conditioning for your home. Do you know what type of AC you are going to buy? Selecting an AC system to install in your home doesn’t have to be complicated if you know what to look for.

Central AC or Window AC Units

Two popular types of air conditioners today are central AC and window AC units. The one you choose is contingent upon the construction of your home and on how much you are willing to spend. Knowing how each system operates will help you make the right choice.

For instance, does your home already have ductwork and vents? This is important because without these you cannot install central AC. Central AC distributes cool air throughout your home via the ductwork and vents. If your home does not already have ductwork and vents, window AC unit might be a better option for you.

Both central AC and window AC units do the job of keeping you cool in the summer, but there are significant things to take into consideration before you make that big purchase.

Pros And Cons of Central AC

A central AC system works by distributing cold air throughout your home by way of the ductwork and vents in your home.

If your home does not already have the ductwork and vents needed, you will have to tack on that extra expense to the installation cost.

This can be somewhat expensive. However, you will save money in the long run because central AC will lower your monthly energy bill, particularly if your home is well insulated.

Central AC is a wonderful invention, but there are a few things you should keep in mind before you make your purchase:

Pros

  • Consistent temperature year-round.
  • Possible heating/air conditioning combination.
  • Controls indoor humidity.
  • Allows for a programmable thermostat.
  • Reduces energy costs.
  • Provides good air filtration.

Cons

  • Expensive to install.
  • Requires ductwork.
  • Requires maintenance.

Pros And Cons of Window AC Units

Another way to keep cool when it’s hot outside is with a window AC unit.

They are inexpensive and require very little maintenance. If you are a DIY type, you can even install it yourself.

Common advantages and drawbacks of window AC units are:

Pros

  • They are inexpensive.
  • No Installation cost.
  • You can take it with you.

Cons

  • Inadequate air filtration.
  • Hot spots inside the home.
  • Can be noisy.

Which AC System is Right For Your Home?

The right air conditioner for your home depends on the construction of your home and on how much you want to spend. It also depends on whether you want to cool your entire home or just one room.

You could install a window AC in every room in your house, but that can get expensive. Consider the pros and cons of each system before you make your purchase.

Each system is reliable and efficient, but they have different features that should be carefully considered. Central AC systems will cool an entire structure, but they are expensive and installation will cost extra if your home is not central AC ready. Window AC units are by far more economical. If you are a renter, you can take it with you when your lease expires.

The team at Integrity Home Solutions in Tampa, FL will be glad to advise you on which system to buy for your home. They will take their time to explain each system and answer all of your questions. Call today for a consultation.
